Oregano Essential Oil

Oregano Essential Oil

Hey everybody! Today is going to be a little bit different. For today’s Young Living Audio Educational series, we’re going to put a little spin on it. We’re going to change things up. We’re going to add a little music. We’re going to make it entertaining. It’s going to be the same great information that you got before, coming from the same brilliant mind with just a little bit of a spin.

So I would like to introduce, I am here with Scott Johnson.

Thanks, John for having me. I’m excited to try out this new process and share the information, see what we can share with all of our members.

Tell me what your position is with Young Living.

I’m the Director of Global Education and also U.S. Sales.

What would you say the purpose of the Audio Educational Series is?

Really it’s just another opportunity for our members to learn about the products that we offer, what makes them useful and how to practically use them in their life. So that’s really the purpose of it, to share more information so people understand what the value of that oil or that product is that we’re discussing.

Today’s oil, it’s a pretty fascinating oil. It’s a member of the mint family, correct?

It is, yes.

Would you ever use it as a mint or use it as a breath freshener?

No, I don’t think it would work very well as a breath freshener unless you maybe want pizza breath!

So it comes from the mint family. It’s used on pizza. Today’s oil that we’re going to be talking about is…

Oregano.

It’s hard to talk about oregano without thinking of pizza, but the benefits…go ahead and tell me about the benefits and how they extend far beyond cooking.

I would say most people when they first think of oregano or they smell it, the first thing that comes to mind is probably pizza or some other kind of Italian dish that’s got oregano inside it; but Oregano really has a long history of use in folklore, and has been used for a variety of purposes among the Greeks and Romans and even the Chinese. So, it’s been a cherished herb that’s still used today for a lot of benefits.

One of the most well-known properties of oregano is that it’s supportive of the immune system, and can offer protection against harmful substances. For example, I like to combine it with Thieves and put it on the bottoms of my feet, and that really helps for that purpose.

Interestingly, oregano can be used with destroying the beneficial bacteria or probiotics that are found in and on the human body. That’s really important because often when people think of a strong product that can destroy harmful substances, well am I going to destroy the good substances that are in my body?

When you talk about harmful substances, what are you referring to? Knives, blades, machetes?

No, of course we’re talking about anything, any kind of germs, micro organisms that are in our environment, toxins, pollutants that if they get inside our body, then obviously we’re going to have harm rather than good occur.

So what’s Oregano? I’ve also heard that it’s a strong antioxidant, correct?

Yes, it is.

OK, for us simple folk, Oregano is a very strong antioxidant. What is an antioxidant?

Well, an antioxidant is a compound that’s able to neutralize free radicals. I always like to use the analogy of a free radical being a bully, because free radicals are molecules that are missing an electron, and because they’re missing that electron, they’re not stable. They go throughout the body trying to find another molecule that has that electron that they want, so they try and steal it. So I say that they’re the bully. The electron is the lunch money, right? So this bully or free radical is going rampant throughout the body to try and steal an electron. It gets to a molecule that has that electron, and an antioxidant is like your big brother. So your big brother comes in, steps in between that bully and says, “You know what? I don’t want you to steal my younger brother or sister’s lunch money, so instead, I’m going to donate to you the lunch money that you want so that you’re taken care of. You still have the lunch money that you’re seeking; but my little brother or sister is not going to be harmed in the process.” So an antioxidant is in essence donating that electron to the free radical. By doing so, it neutralizes it so that it can no longer cause harm within the body.

So, the advantage of that is fewer free radicals may slow the aging process, and it helps you maintain your youthfulness. Less free radicals means less damage to your body, helping you to maintain your best wellbeing. The phenols that are in Oregano assist the cells by scouring the receptor sites to help them work more efficiently. Another way Oregano benefits the immune system is moderating responses to substances in the environment. It’s also supportive of the respiratory system and beneficial to the lungs.

We’re talking about just day-to-day use. Day-to-day aches. Oregano helps that.

It does. Oregano actually is great to soothe occasional muscle soreness. So when you apply it topically, it can be very comforting to many of the aches that you experience every day..

How much are we talking about? Do we need a lot of Oregano used?

Just a few drops, because it is so strong, can go a long way in providing relief. One thing I encourage people is, because Oregano is so potent, it’s a good thing to be mindful of that, and to put some carrier oil on with that and dilute it a little bit so that you can reduce any irritation that might occur because it is so strong on the skin.

So, Oregano does a lot of things for the body. We’ve gone from muscle soreness to an antioxidant, helps neutralize free radicals, but it also helps support the digestive system, right?

It does, yes. Oregano supports the digestive system by aiding the secretion of digestive juices. This maximizes the absorption and utilization of the nutrients that you consume from your food. So, in other words, you’re making better use of what you eat. Oregano is great for that as well.

When it comes to women, how should they be using Oregano? How does it help them?

Some women find that Oregano helps to support their emotions and body during their monthly cycle. It’s also reported that Oregano is something that’s nourishing of the female reproductive system. Many women use that during their monthly cycle for support.

Going back to the idea that Oregano is most closely associated with pizzas, that smell, that distinct aroma that comes from Oregano. What can you tell me about that aroma?

The strong and spicy aroma of Oregano is said to banish sadness and encourage some feelings of security. So it does influence us aromatically too, with our emotions. Interestingly, it’s said in Greek mythology that the goddess Aphrodite invented and placed Oregano on the Earth to make man’s life happier. So it just encourages feelings of happiness as well.

We’ve spent just a bit of time, probably a few minutes talking about Oregano and some of the benefits. Obviously, we’re not going to touch on every single benefit and all the uses, so we always encourage people to share how they’re using Oregano and what benefits they’ve received from it. A great way to do that is in the comments field on this video when it’s posted, or you can just share it through social media. We always find that we can learn all kinds of new things from each other and sharing is always great.

So, again, we hope you guys have enjoyed this new approach to the Young Living Audio Educational Series…just a little bit of a twist. So just to cover, Oregano has a long tradition of being used by the Greeks, the Romans, the Chinese. Oregano has the ability to support the immune system, it’s a strong antioxidant, helps neutralize free radicals, has the ability to help with muscle soreness, aches, support our emotions, and my favorite is that it banishes sadness. So with that, we sign out. Hope you’ve enjoyed it. Hope you’ve enjoyed this new take on Young Living’s Audio Educational Series.

Until next time…

Until next time, we hope you have abundant health and a wonderful day.
